Practice Information

Dr. Ned Baess was awarded his doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the Adler School of Professional Psychology, Chicago, in 2003.  He was clinically trained at the Royal Jubilee Hospital (RJH) and the Urgent Short-Term Assessment and Treatment clinic (USTAT) in Victoria, B.C.  He received specialized training in psychological assessment and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) for the treatment of anxiety, depression, psychosis, PTSD and other disorders.  He is a registered psychologist in British Columbia since 2005.

Dr. Baess earned his Masters degree in counseling in 1993 and began working in mental health for Island Health, Victoria, BC (formerly Vancouver Island Health Authority).  His primary role was working as an emergency mental health outreach clinician providing crisis intervention, assessment, and support to individuals in the community.  Upon becoming a registered psychologist his clinical role changed to providing individual psychotherapy, neuropsychological testing, consultation, and group therapy to inpatient wards and outpatient services at RJH covering a diverse range of psychiatric presentations.  He was the clinical lead in developing a mentorship program providing training and consultation in CBT for a diverse range of mental health clinicians and psychiatrists at RJH.  In addition, Dr. Baess was adjunct professor at the University of Victoria (UVic) in the department of Psychology, and provided practicum training and supervision at RJH for UVic PhD students in Clinical Psychology for many years.  He taught a Social Anxiety course a number of times for Continuing Studies at UVic.

Dr. Baess retired from Island Health in the Fall of 2022.  He is now providing expert care in private practice based on adapting up-to-date Cognitive Behavior Therapies augmented by Mindfulness Based CBT, Interpersonal Therapy, Adlerian Psychology and Positive Psychology to the specific needs of his clients.  He treats a number of Anxiety Disorders (health anxiety, social anxiety, generalized anxiety, panic disorder, and phobias).  Additionally, he treats depression, insomnia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, psychosis, and bereavement/grief.

Working with other members of the client’s care community (e.g., medical professionals), Dr. Baess' aim is always to bring about the best possible therapeutic outcomes.  Although many different mental health workers offer talk therapy to clients, psychologists are generally considered to be one of the most highly trained specialists in delivering this type of therapy. As a registered psychologist who operates under the Health Professions Act (HPA), the privacy and confidentiality rights of my clients are legally protected.

Dr. Baess is registered with the College of Psychologists of British Columbia (CPBC) #1682.  He is a certified member of the Canadian Association of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CACBT) #970.  He is a member of  The National Honor Society in Psychology, Psi Chi

Dr. Baess invites anyone to contact him for further information about the services he provides to the public.
