Practice Information

My name is Heidi Hanazawa Root, and I am grateful to live and work as an uninvited guest on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tseil-Waututh Nations. I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors, holding a Master of Science in Mental Health from Queen Mary University of London (UK) and a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Simon Fraser University.

With many years of professional experience, I bring both strong clinical training and a compassionate, practical approach to my work. I understand that seeking counselling often comes at a time of stress, difficulty, or transition. My role is to honour the challenges you are facing, to recognize the courage it takes to seek change, and to walk alongside you as you work toward your goals.

My Therapeutic Approach

I practice from a trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and collaborative lens. My therapeutic style draws on evidence-based approaches including narrative therapy, somatic attachment therapy, cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), and mindfulness-based practices. This integrative style allows me to tailor sessions to meet your unique needs while supporting both immediate relief and deeper, lasting growth.

Together, we will create a treatment plan grounded in self-compassion. Our work may involve exploring patterns, strengthening coping strategies, and building new skills. The goal is not just to manage challenges, but to cultivate resilience, greater alignment with your values, and meaningful change in your life.

What You Can Expect

In our sessions, I strive to create a respectful and affirming environment where you feel safe to share openly. Many of my clients come to counselling because they feel stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected—from themselves, from their values, or from others. Through our work together, you can expect to gain:

  • Increased self-awareness and understanding of your inner experiences
  • Practical tools for managing stress, anxiety, and emotional challenges
  • A stronger connection to your values and sense of purpose
  • Healthier relationships and deeper engagement with the people around you
  • Greater ease, balance, and confidence as you navigate life’s transitions

I work with teens and adults navigating a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, stress, addiction, eating disorders, ADHD and neurodivergence, identity and self-esteem issues, life transitions, and relationship challenges.

Moving Forward

My commitment as your counsellor is to listen deeply, support your healing process, and help you move toward the changes you want for your life. I welcome clients from all backgrounds and experiences, and I consider it a privilege to support each person’s unique journey.

If you are ready to take the next step, I look forward to working with you toward self-discovery, healing, and meaningful growth.
