Practice Information
Hello Everyone,
I'm Dr. Bea Mackay. I'm a registered Psychologist in Private Practice in BC. with over 30 years of working with individuals, couples and families. I am pragmatic. I use everyday language, and I view every client I see as falling within the range of normal. I do not put clients into boxes' (.E diagnosing ). I have found, growing up,people develop habits which help them survive childhood, of which many are productive. But many of which eventually limit them in adulthood. By Identifying their old habits, interrupting them, and creating new healthy habits, people are able to come fully into their own because they feel different. When one feels different one behaves differently . They experience feeling natural, emotionally older and emotionally healthier.
I am also an author with 3 books published and 3 more in the 'oven'. I have taken some time off to focus on writing and publishing and now I'm back and working with clients. Because of my extensive experience working with so many interesting and diverse clients over the years, I call myself a 'sage' -a wise woman. I am able to 'connect the dots' with the problems clients present to me, with their unhealed traumas in the past. This helps to identify the underlying causes of their issues, speeding up therapy.
Early in my career, I discovered the change agent in therapy. Talk therapy is good AND what about it can evoke change? (see story below) Certainly, reframing (seeing the same information in a new way) helps to evoke change, But there is another way to evoke change.
Babies are born knowing how to do it. They do not have language so they cannot make meaning yet. We tend to unlearn it in the families/cultures we grow up, as well as from, the experiences we have and the quality of our self-talk.
Early in my practice I got some feedback from a doctor about my work with clients; She told me that she refers a lot of her patients for therapy and at their next appointment she asks them ,"How was the therapy?" Most of them responded with "It was good to talk to someone." She then told me that when I see patients that I referred to you; they are already making the changes they need to make." She said she was confused because they didn't realize that it was because of the therapy.
At the time this was great news for me because I had no idea that I was doing anything different than my colleagues - that something was activating the change agent in therapy. I thanked her for the feedback, I told her that I didn't know what I was doing that was activating the change agent but I would find out and let her know.
It was a long time ago and I have found out what it is that manifests change and that is what I have been sharing in my books. It is so simple ,and inexpensive, that I want everyone to know how to do it.
