As a counsellor, I’m always drawn to approaches that help clients connect more deeply with themselves in a compassionate and meaningful way. One of the methods I often use in my practice is Gendlin’s Focusing—a gentle, body-oriented process that invites you to tune into your body’s inner signals as a pathway to greater understanding and healing.

A Different Kind of Listening

Traditional talk therapy often emphasizes thoughts, words, and cognitive insights. Focusing, on the other hand, guides you to turn inward and notice your body’s subtle sensations—the quiet, often wordless feelings that carry emotional meaning. This bodily awareness, called the felt sense, is a source of deep inner knowledge that can reveal what your mind may not yet have put into words.

Why the Body Matters

Our bodies often register experiences long before our conscious minds do. By paying attention to these sensations, we can access a kind of intuitive wisdom that helps make sense of confusing emotions, unresolved situations, or feelings that seem “stuck.”
Rather than analyzing or overthinking, Focusing allows you to listen to yourself in a gentle, grounded, and non-judgmental way—bypassing mental noise and connecting directly with what’s true for you.

What a Focusing Session Looks Like

In a Focusing session, I guide you through a process of slowing down and creating space to notice what your body is communicating. Together, we:

Observe and acknowledge the physical sensations connected to your concerns

Allow these sensations to develop naturally, without pressure or interpretation

Find words, images, or metaphors that express what’s emerging

Notice any shifts, new perspectives, or inner resolutions that arise from this awareness

This process helps you build trust in your own inner experience and strengthens your ability to navigate emotions with compassion and clarity.

How Focusing Can Help

Many clients find Focusing to be a safe and nurturing way to explore their inner world, especially if traditional talk therapy feels overwhelming or overly analytical. With practice, you may experience:

Reduced anxiety and stress

Greater emotional clarity

A stronger sense of self-connection

An increased ability to respond to challenges with calm and insight

By listening closely to your body’s cues, you create space for natural healing and self-understanding to unfold.

Moving Through Challenges Gently

Working with bodily sensations and emotions can sometimes feel unfamiliar or bring up resistance. This is a normal and important part of the process. Focusing emphasizes patience, self-kindness, and respect for your own pace.
In our work together, I’ll support you in meeting whatever arises with curiosity and care, trusting that your body’s wisdom will guide you toward clarity and relief over time.

An Invitation to Begin

If you’re curious about what your body might be trying to tell you, I invite you to explore Focusing as part of our work together. It’s a gentle yet powerful approach that helps you access your inner wisdom and move toward authentic healing—from the inside out.

John Woychuk is a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association; a Certified Clinical Anxiety Treatment Professional, ADHD-Certified Clinical Services Provider and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional.
