<p>&nbsp;Are you feeling <strong>totally exhausted</strong>? Do even small daily tasks feel impossible? You might be experiencing <strong>neurodivergent burnout</strong>.</p><p>This is more than just being tired. It happens when your brain and body are working too hard in a world that isn’t built for neurodivergent people.</p><p>As a neurodivergent therapist, I want you to know: burnout is <strong>not your fault</strong>. Your brain and body are just telling you to slow down. Recovery is not about “fixing yourself.” It’s about <strong>resting, taking care of yourself, and finding ways to live that work for you</strong>.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>What Burnout Feels Like</strong></p><p>Some common signs of burnout include:</p><ul><li><strong>Feeling exhausted</strong> even after sleeping</li><li><strong>Wanting to avoid people or activities</strong></li><li>Trouble <strong>remembering things or making decisions </strong>(brain fog)</li><li>Difficulty <strong>getting through everyday tasks</strong></li></ul><p>Burnout is often linked to <strong>masking</strong> — hiding your neurodivergent traits to fit in (Higgins et al., 2021; Arnold et al., 2021). That said you might be wondering <em>what you can do.</em> Here are some steps you can take to return to your baseline.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Step 1: Give Yourself Permission to Rest</strong></p><p>Your body and brain need a <strong>break</strong>. This can look like:</p><ul><li>Temporarily <strong>reducing responsibilities</strong></li><li><strong>Unmasking</strong> in safe spaces</li><li>Taking <strong>quiet sensory breaks</strong><em><strong> </strong>(think dark room with noise-cancelling headphones and a weighted blanket)</em></li></ul><p>Even <strong>a few minutes of rest</strong> — like stepping outside, closing your eyes, or holding something comforting — can help your system start to recover.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Step 2: Pay Attention to Your Needs</strong></p><p>Recovery is about <strong>finding what actually helps you feel calm and safe</strong>. Ask yourself:</p><ul><li>What helps me <strong>feel calm or focused</strong>? Is it listening to the Endel App? Working alone with headphones?</li><li>What routines and systems make life <strong>easier for me</strong>?</li><li>Where can I feel <strong>safe and accepted as I am</strong>?</li></ul><p>Living your life in a way that actually works for you rather than against you can be really <strong>empowering!&nbsp;</strong></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Step 3: Reframe What Recovery Means</strong></p><p>Recovery doesn’t mean going back to how you were before burnout. It means:</p><ul><li>Setting <strong>boundaries that fit your needs</strong></li><li>Taking <strong>small, manageable steps</strong></li><li><strong>Listening to your body&nbsp;</strong></li></ul><p><em>You are <strong>not lazy or failing</strong>. You are learning how to <strong>live in a way that works for your neurodivergent brain</strong>.</em></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Step 4: Find Support That Understands</strong></p><p>If you choose therapy, look for someone who <strong>understands neurodivergent burnout</strong>.
