Finding Meaning and Purpose Through Your Values
Finding Meaning and Purpose Through Your Values
Many people come to therapy feeling lost, uncertain, or stuck in their lives. They may ask, "What is my purpose?" or "Why do I feel unfulfilled despite doing everything 'right'?" While these questions can feel overwhelming, the answers often lie in a deeper exploration of personal values.
What Are Values?
Values are the guiding principles that shape our decisions, behaviors, and sense of fulfillment. Unlike goals, which are specific achievements, values are ongoing and provide direction in life. For example, a person may value kindness, honesty, or connection. These values influence their daily interactions and long-term choices, shaping a life that feels authentic and meaningful.
The Link Between Values and Meaning
When we align our actions with our values, we experience a sense of purpose and coherence. However, when we drift away from what truly matters to us, we may feel disconnected or dissatisfied. For instance, someone who deeply values creativity but is stuck in a rigid, uninspiring job may feel drained or unmotivated. Conversely, making even small changes—like setting aside time for artistic expression—can restore a sense of vitality.
Identifying Your Core Values
Exploring your values can be a powerful step toward greater fulfillment. Here are a few questions to reflect on:
- What qualities do you admire in others?
- When have you felt most alive or engaged? What were you doing?
- If you knew you only had one year to live, how would you spend your time?
When Life Feels Out of Sync
There are times when external pressures - career demands, family expectations, or societal norms, pull us away from our core values. Therapy can help you navigate these challenges, clarify what truly matters, and realign your actions with your values in a way that is both fulfilling and sustainable.
